GO8070: Growing the Psychiatry Workforce (2026-28) - Psychiatry Workforce Program (PWP) Training Posts

The purpose of this grant opportunity is to provide funding for a salary contribution towards continuing 30 existing PWP training posts, supervisor positions, 10 additional Medical Mental Health Centres (MMHC) training posts and supervisors in each training year 2026-28, with priority given to regional and rural training locations or those that provide mental health services to First Nations people.

From 1 July 2026, 10 new training posts are to commence in MMHC.

This targeted expansion will strengthen psychiatry training opportunities, enhance service delivery across diverse clinical settings and build workforce capability to deliver on the Government’s priorities for mental health service provision.

The grant opportunity will continue to support the enhancement of supervision capacity, especially those working in rural and remote areas.

Additional supervisor funding will ensure training posts are supported and assist in the safe service delivery by trainees.

This activity includes: • Actively monitoring and managing accredited training posts. • Training posts managed through an agreement with each health care setting.

Each agreement with the training setting will ensure quality training, in accordance with college accreditation standards, is provided to registrars participating under the PWP. • Collaboration with universities and other relevant organisations to attract and support First Nations medical graduates and junior doctors into psychiatry training. • The provision of culturally responsive support to First Nations trainees during their fellowship training.

To be eligible you must be the listed organisation and have received an invitation to apply from the department.

The eligible applicant is the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) (ABN 68 000 439 047).

The department will not consider applications that do not satisfy all eligibility criteria.

The department cannot provide a grant if you receive funding from another government source for the same purpose.

If successful, relevant personnel working on the grant must maintain Working with Vulnerable People registration (or equivalent depending on the state/territory) and a Working with Children check; where activities involve planned interactions with children grantees must apply the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and may be required to provide annual statements of compliance.

Compliance with specific legislation/policies may be required (Multicultural Access and Equity Policy, Commonwealth Child Safe Framework, Workplace Gender Equality Act reporting requirements and AIP where applicable).
