Grants to support the growth of Australia's green iron industry

Overview

The Green Iron Investment Fund - National Development Stream provides funding to support early mover commercial-scale green iron projects across Australia, helping cover upfront capital works costs to build facilities that produce concentrated green iron from Australian iron ore.

The program has at least $500 million available across the stream.

Eligibility Criteria

Lead applicant requirements: have an Australian Business Number (ABN), be registered in Australia for GST, and be incorporated in Australia (a subsidiary of an international company that meets eligibility can be lead applicant).

Joint applications/consortiums (including international partners) are acceptable but only the lead applicant will enter the grant agreement.

Projects must:

  • aim to meet the fund's objectives and outcomes
  • be focused on capital works
  • be aimed at establishing a commercial-scale green iron facility by 31 March 2031
  • produce (reduce) Australian iron ore into concentrated iron metal (a green iron facility must produce green iron, not only use it)
  • have commercial scale capacity defined as capacity to produce over 1 million tonnes of green iron per annum (facility must have that capacity by March 2031, though not necessarily be producing at full capacity)
  • be early movers producing and selling green iron by March 2031

Technical and financial readiness:

  • projects must demonstrate financial and technological readiness
  • minimum Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 7 at time of application (guidelines allow TRL 7–9 at application)
  • applicants must outline funding sources and status and are expected to reach Final Investment Decision (FID) within 18 months of grant agreement execution if successful

Eligible activities and expenditure are limited to those specified in Section 5 of the guidelines.

Mandatory attachments include a business case, financial investment plan, decarbonisation plan (including pathway to renewable reducing agent if starting on natural gas), technology plan, and a Community Benefit Sharing Plan.

Applicants must comply with the Future Made in Australia Community Benefit Principles.
