Freight discounts for QLD businesses in remote communities

Overview

The Remote Communities Freight Assistance Scheme provides freight discounts and reimbursements to eligible businesses in remote Queensland communities to reduce freight costs passed on to consumers.

The Scheme offers three types of assistance: Establishment Assistance (now closed for applications) to reimburse certain setup costs, Discount Assistance to reimburse revenue forgone from applying a published discount, and Compliance Assistance to reimburse compliance costs associated with claiming Discount Assistance.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible an applicant must be an owner of an eligible business with one or more premises located in one of the specified remote local government areas (Aurukun; Burke; Carpentaria; Cook; Doomadgee; Kowanyama; Hope Vale; Lockhart River; Mapoon; Mornington; Napranum; Northern Peninsula Area; Pormpuraaw; Torres; Torres Strait Island; Weipa Town Area; Wujal Wujal).

An "eligible business" is defined as a business which holds an Australian Business Number (ABN), is registered for GST and has a bank account in the name of the business.

The retail sale of eligible essential goods by the business, during the most recently ended financial year when the application is made, must have accounted for:

  • if the premises are used primarily for the retail sale of fuel for vehicles, at least 15% of revenue of the business at the premises for the year
  • otherwise, at least 50% of the revenue of the business at the premises for the year
