Funding for disaster affected WA primary producers
Overview
Needs-based, reimbursement funding to help Western Australian primary producers recover from an eligible declared natural disaster, including costs such as professional advice, freight for livestock/fodder/water, and restoration or rebuilding of fencing.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, you must:
- operate a commercial scale farming, pastoral, horticultural or fishing business and be affected by a declared national disaster
- have been operating for at least 1 year
- be registered with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) as a primary producer
- have an Australian Business Number (ABN)
- either own the farm land or hold a current minimum 5 year written agreement to sharefarm or lease the property for the purpose of primary production OR own and operate under a fishing licence or have a 3 year lease of a fishing licence
- devote a minimum of 75% of your labour to the affected primary production enterprise
- confirm that your business usually generates at least 50% of its total income from the affected enterprise
Applications must be made within 6 months of a declared natural disaster.
Assistance is available only for eligible declared disasters for which DRFAWA has been activated.

Funding Amount
Funding is needs-based and offered as reimbursement. Funding may be used for obtaining professional advice directly relating to addressing issues arising from the natural disaster; freight costs of transporting livestock, fodder or water, and building or fencing equipment or machinery; the restoration or rebuilding of fencing (including materials where fencing has been dismantled or damaged due to counter-disaster operations or where roaming livestock presents a public safety risk); and other needs-based measures specific to the disaster type. DRFAWA measures include professional advice, a freight subsidy (50%), fencing along a major road (livestock producers only), fencing dismantled/damaged as part of counter-disaster operations, and an interest rate subsidy on a new loan for recovery. Primary Producer Recovery Grants (Category C & D) may provide additional grants when an event is deemed exceptional. Funding is not intended to compensate for losses where adequate insurance could have been obtained and is only available when applicants can demonstrate they have exhausted their own resources to recover from a disaster event.
