GO8530: 2026 Independent Research Institutes Infrastructure Support Scheme

IRIISS allocates funds for infrastructure support to independent medical research institutes managing NHMRC research funds.

IRIISS aims to develop and maintain infrastructure to support high quality health and medical research by contributing to infrastructure costs associated with competitively awarded NHMRC research grants managed by independent medical research institutes.

Applications are only accepted from NHMRC Administering Institutions.

IRIISS grants are only awarded to NHMRC-approved Administering Institutions that are independent medical research institutes.

An independent medical research institute must be an independent legal and business entity engaged in health and medical research and not directly accountable to another organisation.

It must be established by an Act of Parliament or incorporated under the Corporations Laws; be a separate legal entity with its own Australian Business Number that is not shared with another research organisation; have health and medical research as an object in its constitution, articles of association or enacting legislation; have an independent governing Board of Management on which no university, hospital or other identifiable group or organisation has majority representation; have a Director or CEO accountable only to that Board; and have researchers accountable to the Director or CEO.

Before funding is awarded, the institute must confirm these matters in writing and may be required to provide supporting documentation.

Eligible institutions may also be required to provide information on State or Territory Government infrastructure support.
