Payments for WA businesses hiring new apprentices or trainees

Overview

The Jobs and Skills WA Employer Incentive provides WA businesses with milestone-based cash payments to help cover the costs of employing a new entrant trainee or apprentice.

Payment amounts depend on the nominal term of the apprenticeship or traineeship, with additional loading possible for occupations on the State priority occupation list.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must:

  • have an Australian business number (ABN)
  • be running a business which is currently below the payroll tax threshold (page text states 'currently at $950,000 per annum' in one place and 'currently at $1,000,000 [one million] per annum' in another)
  • employ a new entrant trainee or an apprentice
  • and have lodged the training contract for registration on or after 2019-07-01

Eligible employers explicitly listed include:

  • employers of new entrant trainees
  • employers of apprentices below the payroll tax threshold (stated as $1,000,000 per annum on the eligibility page)
  • group training organisations (GTOs)
  • Local Government and Government trading enterprises (GTEs) (with approved lists referenced)

Employers may be eligible for partial payments if their payroll tax liability or eligibility for Construction Training Fund (CTF) incentives changes during the training contract.
